Book Design
- Designing a book is a multi-level task.
- It requires attention to detail, and involves much more than designing a cover.
- A book needs a title page. This will provide your reader and booksellers with information about the book, including copyright, date and publishing info.
- A book has what we call Front Matter and End Matter.
- Front Matter refers to a Preface, a Dedication, a Title page and a Table of Contents.
- End Matter refers to an Index and, perhaps, some information about the author, or about other books by the author.
- The number of pages in a book needs to be considered in relation to the printer and the type of binding.
- Working lay-out around page numbers divisable by 8 pages is much more manageable. First and last pages will fall on the same sheet.
- You need to consider if your book requires a blank page at the beginning or end.
- Choosing end papers can be fun, as there is a wonderful range of texture and colour available.
- Selecting binding can sometimes be tricky. Perfect binding, often, does not give a long lasting book, but is cost efficient.
